Classic Text Adventure Masterpieces of Infocom (1996) - title versions

Release and serial numbers read from the z-code headers of every story file on the disc, both platforms. On the Mac side the story is the data fork of each double-clickable game application (the interpreter lives in the resource fork); Arthur, Journey and Zork Zero instead ship a separate STORY.DATA beside their picture libraries. On the PC side the story is the game’s .DAT (or .ZIP for the V6 games), whether in the shared PC/DATA/ or the game’s own folder. “Same build” compares the z-code itself, up to each file’s header-declared length, so platform padding is ignored. Where the two platforms ship different Z-machine versions, the cell reads Mac / PC. “Built-in hints” marks builds whose z-code contains the in-game hint system (the on-screen InvisiClues menu), determined from the decoded game text rather than the mere presence of a HINT verb - several hint-less games define HINT only to point at the mail-order InvisiClues booklet.

Thirty-three titles; The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Shogun are the catalog’s absentees - both survive on the Lost Treasures CDs (volume 1 and volume 2 respectively). Twenty-five ship as the identical build on both platforms; the eight splits run in both directions:

The hints column follows release history: the late releases carry the on-screen hint system natively on both platforms (Border Zone, Nord and Bert, Sherlock, and the V6 Arthur and Zork Zero - though not Journey, whose menu-driven interface shipped without one, and not Beyond Zork), while Planetfall and Leather Goddesses have hints only where a platform got the Solid Gold build. So a Mac owner of this disc has in-game hints in seven titles, a PC owner in five.

One spelling quirk preserved from the pressing: the Mac application is cataloged as LEATHER GODESSES, one d short.
