Releases on original media

What the boxes actually shipped, one section per title.

This is a different question from the de-facto builds, which names the one build the community treats as each game’s version of record and says which compilation to get it from. That page is for deciding where to play a game. This one is a record of what has been read first hand off original diskettes: which build each platform’s box carried, verified against the disc rather than against a catalog. The two disagree more often than you would expect, which is the point - several boxes shipped builds that no compilation carries and no leaked repository holds.

Those builds are not unknown to the world, and this page does not claim to have rescued them. Andrew Plotkin’s Obsessively Complete Infocom Catalog documents every release listed here and hosts a copy of each. What these discs add is provenance rather than preservation: a build read off the physical media it shipped on, with the flux kept and the checksum verified, and the platform-level detail that a single archived copy cannot show.

Every build below was read with a Greaseweazle from the physical diskette, extracted, and checked against its own Z-machine checksum; the checksum column is the declared value, confirmed by recomputing it over the story body. Where a build is byte-identical to a copy from another source, that is stated, because agreement between independent witnesses is the strongest evidence available that a reconstruction is right. Method is in floppy-imaging.md.

The part number is recorded exactly as printed on the diskette label, since it is the one identifier on the physical media itself and how releases are told apart without reading them. A dash means it has not been recorded yet, not that the disk lacks one.

These are Infocom Order Codes: a Product Code for the game plus a System Code for the platform, as set out in Doherty’s Fact Sheet - so IS4-IB2-FD1 is Hitchhiker’s (IS4) for IBM/MS-DOS (IB2), and IZ1-AP2-FD1 is Zork I (IZ1) for the Apple Macintosh (AP2). After the Activision merger the platform half switched to Activision’s codes, which is why Planetfall’s later disk reads PD-IS3G-04 - PD being IBM/MS-DOS - with the Solid Gold edition marked by the G in IS3G. Beware two traps: Hitchhiker’s Solid Gold shares the plain release’s IS4 rather than taking a G code, and a code alone does not always settle which edition is in the box.

Carried by no compilation in this catalog and by no leaked repository: Wishbringer r68.850501, Enchanter r10.830810, Sorcerer r4.840131, Sorcerer r6.840508, Beyond Zork r49.870917, Trinity r11.860509, Enchanter r16.831118 and Bureaucracy r86.870212 - eight builds on eight boxes, with Sorcerer alone accounting for two of them on two platforms. Spellbreaker r63.850916 and Zork I Solid Gold r52.871125 reached no compilation either but do survive in the leak, and in both cases the retail disc matches Infocom’s archived build byte for byte.

Checked against the Obsessively Complete Infocom Catalog. All 21 stories extracted here were compared with its hosted copies: 14 are byte-identical, and the other 7 differ only in the two or three platform header bytes at 0x01, 0x04 and 0x05 - flags1 and the base of high memory - which sit below the checksummed region at 0x40, so both copies compute the same Z-machine checksum. That is an independent confirmation in both directions, and it is how the Sorcerer disk’s protected-track decode was verified: 560 sectors recovered by breaking the protection, yielding a story that matches an externally archived copy to within those header bytes.

Atari 8-bit 5.25” 90K - v3 r10.830810 109,126 6DB4 On no compilation and in no repository. The first Enchanter release, five builds before the de-facto r29.860820. Story spans both surfaces; the jacket was punched for a second index hole to reach the reverse.
PC 5.25” 180K SS - v3 r16.831118 109,234 58F5 On no compilation. Thirteen builds before the de-facto.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Solid Gold)

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 360K DS IS4-IB2-FD1, PD-IS4G-04 v5 r31.871119 158,412 410D The de-facto Solid Gold build. Byte-identical to the leak’s hitchhikersguide-gold compile and to LTOI1’s PC copy, and see below: two separately numbered printings hold the same master.

Two printings of this edition are held, and their disks are byte-identical across the whole 368,640-byte image - boot sector, FAT, directory and unused space included, not merely the payload files. Everything that differs is on paper:

  First printing Second printing
ISBN 0-87321-227-4 0-87321-446-3
Bar code 05105101277 051051014461
Disk label IS4-IB2-FD1 PD-IS4G-04
Package codes PD-IS4, PD-844-24 IS4-IB1, PD-IS4G-07, PD-844-41
Stated requirement 128K, MS-DOS 2.0 or higher 192K, MS-DOS 2.0 or higher

Three things worth taking from that. The second package lists the Infocom and Activision schemes side by side, which is the behavior Doherty describes and the reason Hitchhiker’s Solid Gold appears under the plain IS4 in one place and IS4G in another. The disk and the box carry different numbers - PD-IS4G-04 on the media against PD-IS4G-07 on the package - so a citation should say which was read. And the stated memory requirement rose from 128K to 192K between printings while the software did not change by a single byte, so a requirement printed on a box is a claim about the package, not a fact about the program.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 180K SS - v3 r59.860730 129,022 D070 The de-facto build.
PC 3.5”, 360K-formatted PD-IC1-04T v3 r59.860730 129,022 D070 Byte-identical to the 5.25” and Atari ST copies. A 3.5” disk formatted as 40 cylinders x 2 heads x 9 sectors, so it decodes as ibm.360, not ibm.720. Carries far more than the game: a full installer suite, LEATHER.COM, a READ.ME documenting the Cornerstone boss key, and a DEMO subdirectory holding a Cornerstone demo byte-identical to the one on the Lurking Horror disk.
Atari ST 3.5” 360K SS - v3 r59.860730 129,022 D070 Byte-identical to the PC copy.
Atari 8-bit 5.25” 90K flippy - v3 r59.860730 129,022 D070 Reconstructed from both surfaces. Differs from the PC and ST copies in four places only: three header bytes at 0x01/0x04/0x05, below the checksummed region, plus one of trailing length. An independent platform agreeing to within the known header bytes is what confirms that reconstruction.

The dual-media grey box

The 3.5” disk above is one of two in a single grey box, bought from a seller in Australia, and the package carries codes that the standard references do not:

ISBN 0-87321-402-1
Bar code 051051014027
Package codes PD-IC1T2, IC-1-IB3
5.25” disk PD-IC1-04
3.5” disk PD-IC1-04T

Two things follow, and the box is the evidence for both because it is a controlled comparison - one product, one package, two media.

T marks the 3.5” disk. Both disks carry PD-IC1-04; only the 3.5” one adds a T, and the package code PD-IC1T2 carries it too. PD-IC1-04 is documented in collector listings as the IBM release; PD-IC1-04T appears nowhere searchable.

IB3 is an undocumented system code. Doherty’s Fact Sheet lists IB1 for IBM and 100% compatibles and IB2 for IBM and MS-DOS compatibles, and stops there - IB3 is absent from it, and from search results generally. A third IBM code on a package that ships both media sizes suggests IB3 denotes exactly that, which would make the Fact Sheet’s table incomplete rather than wrong. One box is not proof; a second dual-media package would settle it.

The arrangement itself is not unique - the 1989 Zork Zero box also shipped both media - but that box put different graphics renditions on each, so whether these two disks carry the same software is a real question rather than a formality. The 5.25” disk from this box has not been read yet.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos (Solid Gold)

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Apple II 5.25” 140K flippy - v5 r4.880405 159,928 EFE4 The Solid Gold build, which Masterpieces carries only on its Mac side. Story spans both surfaces.

The Lurking Horror

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 360K DS - v3 r203.870506 128,986 FB9C The de-facto build. The box also bundles a Cornerstone demo.

Planetfall

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
TI-99/4A 5.25” 90K flippy - r37.851003 - - Imaged complete on both surfaces, volume PLANETFALL. The story has not been extracted: ZCut does not support TI-99, so the on-disk layout has to be worked out by hand. The last 8-bit gap.

Planetfall (Solid Gold)

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 360K DS PD-IS3G-04 v5 r10.880531 136,560 D208 The only cataloged DOS carrier of this edition. Byte-identical to the leak’s s3.zip and to LTOI1’s Mac copy - the hybrid CDs put Solid Gold only on their Mac side. Its interpreter is Wishbringer Solid Gold’s, with the story filename and title swapped: the two differ in 20 bytes of 33,946.

Sorcerer

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Apple II 5.25” 140K IZ5-AP1-FD1 v3 r6.840508 109,482 E7AC On no compilation and in no repository. Two releases after the Atari disk’s r4, nine before the de-facto r15.851108. The disk is copy protected: tracks 1 and 3-30 use a D5 AA BC data prologue instead of D5 AA AD, so a stock decoder recovers 84 of 560 sectors and the disk looks dead. Every address field is intact and all 560 sectors decode with a2gcr.py.
Atari 8-bit 5.25” 90K - v3 r4.840131 109,734 2E36 On no compilation and in no repository. The first released Sorcerer - Doherty lists three earlier builds, all unreleased - eleven before the de-facto r15.851108.

Spellbreaker

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Commodore 64 5.25” 170K - v3 r63.850916 128,480 6C0A Doherty’s first release, one build before the de-facto r87.860904. Absent from every disc, but byte-identical to the leak’s compiled r63 - the first direct confirmation here that a “Revision NN (Original Source)” commit holds the build that actually shipped.

Stationfall

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 360K DS - v3 r107.870430 128,934 2871 The de-facto build.
Amiga 3.5” 880K DS - v3 r107.870430 128,934 2871 Byte-identical to the PC copy and to the leak’s compiled build.

Trinity

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Atari ST 3.5” 360K SS - v4 r11.860509 262,016 FAAE On no compilation and in no repository. Earlier than the r12.860926 the CDs and the leak’s “Revision 12” commit carry. The disc also preserved LONGWATE.SAV, a period saved game left by an earlier player - the first save recovered from original media here.

Wishbringer

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Apple II 5.25” 140K - v3 r68.850501 128,952 81A5 On no compilation and in no repository. The first Wishbringer release, predating the r69.850920 the compilations standardized on.

Wishbringer (Solid Gold)

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
PC 5.25” 360K DS - v5 r23.880706 164,712 4222 The one shipped edition no compilation carried; the leak holds only its source. Byte-identical to the catalog’s hosted copy. Built-in hints present.

Zork I, II and III

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Apple II 5.25” 140K flippy - Zork I v3 r88.840726 84,876 A129 Side 1 of the Trilogy’s first disc. De-facto build; a byte-identical prefix of the LTOI1 copy.
Apple II 5.25” 140K flippy - Zork II v3 r48.840904 89,912 D899 Side 2 of that same disc. Cross-checked against a separate period backup copy, byte-identical across all 559 of its readable sectors.
Apple II 5.25” 140K - Zork III v3 r17.840727 82,714 2E7A A second, non-flippy disc in the same package.

Zork I (Solid Gold)

Platform Media Part no. Build Bytes Checksum Notes
Macintosh 3.5” 400K SS IZ1-AP2-FD1 v5 r52.871125 105,264 4B37 On no compilation - the leak is this build’s only other source, and the story is byte-identical to its zork1-gold compile. A bootable MFS System disk; the game is a single application whose data fork holds the story and whose resource fork holds the interpreter. It boots to a full-screen Zork I splash, stored as a raw 512x342 bitmap.

Zork Zero
